Often times, I consider sketch to be more beautiful than a "finished" piece of art or painting. I use the art of sketch to drive my brushstrokes in painting. I prefer a painterly and impressionistic or cubist look in my paintings and others', for this reason. I feel we now have cameras to produce life as art in exact dimensions and images and I leave it up to painters to create life in a flexible, loose and creative manner, like documenting a memory, deep feeling or dream. This could begin to explain the need for abstract, to those who might not understand abstract art. Most times, when sketching, I try not to lift my pen or pencil from the paper more than about once or twice per total figure drawing. I like to have long, fluid lines in my sketches because I feel this is the way in which God created the world with His paint brush. One part flowing continuously into the next. I love drawing more than anything on this earth because drawing people, nature and flowers never gives you the same reference twice. There are no two exact mountains or finger prints and I celebrate that with my graphite. The life of sketch is an ever-changing journey that never gets boring or dull.
